Spencer "BestNess" Garner has been making a name for himself in the Super Smash Bros scene and is widely regarded as the best Ness player in the world. After his top 5 placing at 'Super Splat Bros' we caught up with him to talk about his come up and the future competing in Smash Ultimate.
How long have you been playing Smash?
3 years competing since 2015, but I played when I was young.
What got you started playing smash?
As a kid I always looked forward to the new smash games coming out, always been my favorite game. Once I found out there for were tournaments it was a perfect match. A way to combine my competitiveness with my favorite game... and possibly make some cash.
What kept you playing?
I lost my first few tournaments, didn’t win one for about 6 months. This kept me coming back because I wanted to beat new and better people, and I still feel this way.
Do you remember your breakthrough tourney?
The kind of breakthrough I’m going for hasn’t happened yet. Has to be on the national scale for it to mean something to me.
Who was your hero / mentor in the scene, if any.
I don't have one.
Do you have a favorite set you ever played?
Big House doubles grand finals. Even though it was doubles it was cool to win a national.
What would your advice be to someone coming into the smash scene?
My advice to someone new to smash would to focus on improving the little things and being patient. Everyone thinks they’ll be amazing quick and it doesn’t work like that.
What are you looking forward to in Smash Ultimate?
In Ultimate I’m excited to be a veteran. I know a lot of the scene and am ready to take my skill to the next level. There will be a lot of new players as well and I’m looking forward to see what they have to offer.
Who are you going to play now that you have a feel for the cast?
Ness has felt natural in every game and this is still the case, still looking at rest of cast for a secondary. Also, waiting for DLC.
After placing top 5 in doubles and singles at Super Splat Bros what are your goals and expectations going into 2019?The goals are to constantly keep improving and enjoy the game as much as possible. Expectations are to WIN. 😇
